Yeon Chung-su (1557∼1621) was born as the first son of Yeon Jeong-won and Lady Lee of the Wolseong clan in 1557 (the 12th year of the reign of King Myeongjong), and was the great-grandchild of Yeon Jeong-ryeol. However, he was adopted by his father’s fifth elder brother, Yeon Jeong-u. When the Japanese invasion of Korea broke out in 1592, he and Sin Gyeong-haeng formed a band of righteous soldiers in the Cheongan area and won a battle against a Japanese force. He then walked to the Yeongyu royal temporary residence where King Seonjo was staying at that time and served the king with great sincerity. In 1593 (the 26th year of the reign of King Seonjo), he was appointed as a Chambong (grade-9 civil official) of the Protocol Office, and also served as a civil official of the Procurement Office and as the chief of a post station. In 1595 (the 28th year of the reign of King Seonjo), he returned to his hometown where, together with the local magistrate Seo Sa-won, he repaired a local Confucian school that had been damaged during the Japanese invasion of Korea in 1592, and taught Confucian students there. He became the magistrate of Aneum in 1602 (the 35th year of the reign of King Seonjo).
