한곡리는 동학농민혁명의 제2차 기포 당시인 9월 18일 동학 교주 최시형(崔時亨)이 각 포의 접주들을 불러 모으고 “교도들을 동원하여 전봉준과 협력하여, 선사(先師)의 숙원(宿寃)을 쾌신(快伸)하고 종국(宗國)의 급난(急難)에 동부(同赴)할” 것을 지시하며 기포령을 내린 곳이다. 마을 바로 위에 있는 7~8m 가량의 문바위에는 이 지역 동학농민혁명에 앞장섰던 박희근(朴晦根)·김정섭(金定燮)·박맹호(朴孟浩)·김영규(金永圭)·김재섭(金在燮)·박창근(朴昌根)·신필우(申弼雨) 등 목숨을 건 투쟁을 결의한 7명의 이름을 음각되어 있다. 당시 한곡리 문바위은 수천 명의 농민군이 모인다 해서 '새 서울'이라고도 불리기도 했다.
한곡리에는 문바위 외에도 동학 제2세 교주 최시형이 머물면서 동학교단을 지휘한 집이 남아 있는데, 당시 청산 동학접주로 활동하던 김낙현(金樂賢, 1858~1898)의 집이었다. 본명이 낙현이고, 최시형에게 39살에 “성원”이라는 호를 받았다. 이곳에서 최시형은 대접주들을 소집해 항일전쟁을 위한 동원령을 내렸다. 또한 아들 최봉주의 묘(추정), 동학교도들이 훈련했던 훈련장 터 등의 동학농민혁명 관련 유적이 남아있다.

영어 내용

The village of Munbawi in Hangok-ri, Cheongsan-myeon, Okcheon-gun is said to have been the hiding place of Choe Si-hyeong, the second leader of the Donghak movement.
The Donghak army set up its Headquarters Directorate in Jangnae-ri, Oesongni-myeon, Boeun-gun, and also established a hideout close to Boeun. This fact is proven by the list of seven Donghak leaders that is engraved on Munbawi Rock, one of various large rocks in the village of Munbawi. The seven names are written in Chinese characters, i.e., 朴晦根, 金定燮, 朴孟浩, 金榮圭, 金再燮, 朴昌根, and 申弼雨, which refer to Park Hoe-geun, Kim Jeong-seop, Park Maeng-ho, Kim Yeong-gyu, Kim Jae-seop, Park Chang-geun, and Sin Pil-u, respectively. The inscription of this list of names is said to have been engraved in 1893, but it is difficult to read as it has become darkened and covered with moss over the years, although the characters themselves remain clear.
The background to the carving of the names on the rock is unknown, but it can be interpreted to mean that while many Donghak followers had to hide their identity and whereabouts at that time, they engraved their names on this rock to strengthen their determination to fight for freedom of religion and other causes. Therefore, this inscription is considered an important material for the study of Donghak.
