Sansingak Shrine, which was built to honor the local mountain spirits, is located mid-way up a hill behind the village of Oryonggol in Yonggye-ri, Eumseong. The structure has a tin roof and measures three kan (a unit of measurement referring to the distance between two columns) at the front and one kan at the sides. In the center of the building is a room with under-the-floor heating (ondol) that is used by the ritual officials, flanked by a ritual room housing a painting of the mountain spirits and a kitchen. The Sansinje (Ritual to the Mountain Deity) of Yonggye-ri used to be held for seven days as the local mine (Mugeukgwangsan) flourished and the village worshiped the mountain spirits, but nowadays it is held at 12 a.m. on the first day of the first lunar month every year. Two ritual officials are selected according to a divination process in which one’s fortunes are predicted for a given day. On the day of the ritual, a ritual official goes up to the shrine around noon, cleans the area around the shrine, spreads red clay, ties the geumjul (straw rope), and applies new changhoji (Korean paper made of mulberry bark) to the doors. The ritual offerings for the ritual table include rice cakes, a pig’s head, a cloth, three-colored thread, and alcohol. The ritual is performed according to Confucian procedures, and includes prayers for the villagers’ health, longevity, and well-being. On the day after the ritual, all the villagers gather together for a feast.
