악기장은 악기를 만드는 전문적인 기술을 보유한 사람을 일컫는다. 악기장은 전통악기의 주 재료인 나무와 가죽, 명주실, 대나무, 쇠, 돌, 흙 등을 이용하여 악기를 설계하고 제작하는 공예적 기능과 악기가 지닌 특유의 소리를 정확하게 만들어내야 하는 음악적 기능이 함께 어우러져야 하는 점에서 고도의 기술이 요구되는 분야이다.
2009년 조준석은 충청북도 무형문화재 악기장으로 종목이 지정됨과 동시에 보유자로 인정되었다. 2023년 전승능력, 전승환경, 전수활동 기여도 등이 탁월하여 조준석은 국가무형문화재 악기장으로 승격되었다. 현재는 종목만 유지되고 있다.

영어 내용

The Korean word “akgijang” refers to a skilled maker of traditional Korean musical instruments. Of the various types of musical instruments, stringed instruments require a higher level of musical knowledge and artistic techniques for their production, including not only in-depth knowledge of the diverse materials used to make them, such as wood, leather, silk, bamboo, metal, stone and clay, but also a profound understanding of the mechanisms for making and controlling sounds in order to create precise musical pitches. Jo Jun-seok of Simcheon-myeon, Yeongdong-gun is an officially acknowledged master instrument maker who is dedicated to the production of a wide range of traditional stringed and wind instruments including the gayageum, geomungo, haegeum, daegeum, ajaeng, and danso. His latest interest includes the research and restoration of newly found ancient instruments.
