1690년 중화사 대웅전에 봉안하기 위해 조성된 영동 중화사 지장시왕도는 충원과 혜은이 제작하였다. 화면 중앙에 지장보살을 중심으로 좌우에 협시인 도명존자와 무독귀왕, 시왕이 2단으로 정연하게 서 있으며, 그 위로 판관과 사자, 옥졸, 동자 등이 배치되었다. 이러한 화면 구성은 17세기와 18세기에 조성된 지장시왕도 불화 형식을 충실히 따르고 있다.

영동 중화사 지장시왕도는 바탕천과 안료 박락이 심각한 부분을 중심으로 1969년(추정)에 중수되었다. 하지만 중수 범위가 이전 화면을 변형하거나 채색을 전면으로 칠하는 방식이 아니라 손상된 부분만 중수하는 방식이었다. 특히 존상의 얼굴이나 신체, 복식의 옷주름과 문양, 대좌의 모양새나 문양 등을 원형에 가깝게 따라 그리고 손상되지 않은 부분은 원형 그대로 남겨 두었다. 또한 화면 상단의 하늘과 하늘꽃 표현 등은 17세기와 18세기 초에 조성된 불화의 특징이 그대로 남아 있어 주목된다.

이처럼 영동 중화사 지장시왕도는 1690년 조성 당시의 모습과 20세기 중엽 화면 손상이 심한 불화를 중수하는 방식을 보여주는 희귀한 사례이자, 조선후기 충청북도의 불교 미술의 면모를 보여주는 우수한 작품이다.

영어 내용

The Painting of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva and the Ten Underworld Kings of Junghwasa Temple in Yeongdong was created by Chung-won and Hye-eun to be enshrined in the temple’s Daeungjeon Hall in 1690. Ksitigarbha is depicted in the center, flanked by two attendants, the Buddhist monk Daoming and the Demon King Wudu, and the Ten Underworld Kings, standing in two orderly rows. Above them are judges, messengers, boy monks, and other figures. As such, this painting faithfully follows the composition of the Paintings of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva and the Ten Underworld Kings produced in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
The painting was restored in 1969 (estimated), with the focus on repairing the base cloth and those areas where the pigments had significantly peeled off. However, the restorers did not aim to transform the previous picture or to paint the entire area with colors, but to restore only the damaged parts. In particular, the face and body of the Bodhisattva, the folds and patterns of the clothing, and the shape and design of the pedestal were re-drawn as close to the original work as possible, while any undamaged parts were left untouched.
In addition, the expression of the sky and the divine flowers at the top of the canvas is noteworthy as it retains the characteristics of Buddhist paintings from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
