Located in the village of Haenggal in Noam 1-ri, Doan-myeon, Jeungpyeong-eup, Jeungpyeong-gun, Chungcheongbuk-do, the Giseongjeon Shrine was built to house the portrait of Gija, the semi-legendary founder of Gija Joseon, by Han Eung-gak in 1854 (the 5th year of the reign of King Cheoljong of Joseon). It is a wooden structure with a hip-and-gable, tiled roof and an elevated three-partitioned gate which is surrounded by a wall, in front of which stands a red spiked gate. The shrine measures three kan (a unit of measurement referring to the distance between two columns) at the front and two kan at the sides. The shrine was repaired in 1922 and 1969. An ancestral ceremony is held as a Confucian event on March 15 and September 15 on the lunar calendar every year. The portrait of Gija wearing a pyeongjeonggeon (flat-top hat) is a copy that was made using seolchae (a method of painting with color over Chinese ink), and measures 41.5 cm in width and 93.5 cm in length. Based on the inscription on the lower right-hand side of the portrait, which reads “Kimisam bongjeung” and means “Offered by Kim I-sam,” it is presumed to have been copied by Kim I-sam.
