이 불상은 가섭사 극락보전(極樂寶殿)안에 주존(主尊)으로 모셔져 있는 불상으로 목불(木佛)이며, 높이가 90cm이다. 현재는 금으로 도금하여 모셔 놓았다.
이 불상은 전체적인 조각 기법이 정제되었으며, 얼굴 모습은 원만하고 인자한 모습이다. 이마에는 백호가 있고, 귀는 길고, 목에는 상도가 표현되어 있다. 오른손은 어깨에 들어 외장을 하였고, 왼손은 무릎 위에 들어 상장한 설법인을 취하고 있다. 이 불상은 본래 가섭사의 본존불이 아니라, 음성읍 용산리 상봉악사가 폐사될 때 옮겨왔다는 설과, 감우리 성주사가 폐사 될 때 옮겨왔다는 설이 있다.

The Wooden Seated Sakyamuni Buddha of Gaseopsa Temple in Eumseong is enshrined as the principal statue of the Buddha in the temple’s Geungnakbojeon Hall. It stands 90 cm tall and has been gilded.
Created using refined sculpting techniques, the Buddha is depicted with an amicable and benevolent face, an urna on his forehead, long ears, and the Samdo (i.e. the three paths a Buddhist must follow to attain enlightenment) on his neck. The Buddha forms the Vitarka mudrā, or "mudra of discussion," in which his right hand is raised up to his right shoulder, while his left hand is placed on his left knee.
There are two tales associated with this statue: one claims that it was moved here from Sangbongaksa Temple in Yongsan-ri, Eumseong-eup when the temple was closed, while the other says that it was moved here from Seongjusa Temple in Gamu-ri when it was closed.
